KEY INFORMATION
A Democratic Committee is a local group of volunteers and elected committee members who work to strengthen the Democratic Party within their community. These committees help recruit and support candidates, engage voters, share information about key issues, and organize grassroots efforts like canvassing, phone banking, and community events. By connecting neighbors with the democratic process, a Democratic Committee helps ensure that local voices are heard and represented in government.

Who Makes up a Democratic Committee?
A Democratic Committee is typically made up of locally elected or appointed committee people, along with a chair, vice chair, secretary, and treasurer. In Green Tree, we have four districts with two committee people (one man and one woman) from each district.
Many committees also include volunteers who support events, communications, outreach, and voter engagement efforts. Together, these individuals represent their neighborhoods, guide the committee’s priorities, and help strengthen Democratic participation at the grassroots level.
A Democratic Committee Person is a locally elected or appointed volunteer who represents their neighborhood within the Democratic Party. They serve as a direct link between residents and the party’s leaders, helping to share information, listen to community concerns, and encourage civic engagement. Committee people often help register voters, support Democratic candidates, and strengthen participation in local elections. Their role is essential in ensuring that grassroots voices shape the direction of the party and the community.

How do you get on to a democratic committee?
Most people join a Democratic Committee by running for and winning a local committee person seat, which appears on the ballot during the primary election cycle - every four years. These positions represent small geographic areas, such as voting districts. To get on the ballot, candidates need to gather ten petition signatures from registered Democrats in their district. If a seat becomes vacant between elections, interested community members may also be appointed by the committee to fill the role.
Does Green Tree Currently have a Democratic Committee?
Yes, Green Tree has a Democratic Committee with a long history. As our community and its voters continue to grow and our needs evolve, we see an exciting opportunity with this election to bring in fresh ideas and approaches that build on the existing foundation and better engage both the current and next generation of Democratic voters.
